I heard a disturbing story this morning while driving my daughter and her friends to school. One of her friends was called “ugly”, and pushed down in the hall by a small group of girls at school. They have also been doing hurtful things through social media to numerous people. My heart broke for so many reasons. First, for my daughters’ friend. She is far from ugly. She is wonderful, inside and out. A spunky, vibrant cheerleader in their school with a beautiful laugh and smile. And then my heart broke for the girls that behaved so badly. What is going on at home that they think bullying people is okay? That they feel comfortable in calling someone ugly, that it’s okay to say hurtful things through social media? I am worried for my children’s generation. I see a lot of disregard for humankind. The world of social media has taken over and a disconnect has been created between reality and fantasy. What those girls need is to have their asses busted and to be grounded until they learn some manners. Sorry if I offend. However, I was raised by parents that spanked, grounded, and they taught myself and my siblings to respect other people. And guess what? I would never look at another person and call them ugly. I actually wouldn’t even think something like that. Nor would I stand idly by and watch as someone was being bullied by a group of kids. Those young girls need to understand they are the image of their Creator and should treat others and themselves accordingly. They are only young teenagers and I cringe to think about what kind of adults they will grow up to be. But it seems that so many parents today are worried about doing what is “socially acceptable” that the kids have not been taught what respecting other people is about. I am done with my rant, but my hope is that we all do better. Let us make sure it is not one of our kids that is the bully; let us pay more attention to what are kids are doing on social media, and let us protect the ones that are on the receiving end of the bully. Signing off for now. - C.J.
