Poem for Maya (and any little one)
When you’re small as you are,
the world seems en-O-rmously big – even mo-nu-mental!
Mommy and Daddy - like tall buildings –
Tower up there in the sky – along with the sun
and the plane flying up so high.
But – actually! – you too are oh-so-very big –
Simply look down and notice an ant –
That funny little bug – you know – with antennae like antlers…
The thing is, my love, everything is exactly in scale:
Each creature is both e-le-mentally small
and en-O-rmously mo-nu-mental.
Believe it or not – my cute little giant –
Right inside of your tummy there is a cosmos of bugs
That on you are reliant.
We call them mi-crobes
No, not MY crobes, but mi-crobes!
And, no, no, NO – they are not wearing robes
But the fact of the matter:
You have YOUR mi–crobes
I got MY mi-crobes –
And they both like pancake batter.
Am I using big words?
My apologies, my sweet precious cutie!
My little-big point is…
That you yourself are a whole big world
And the word “Cosmos” kinda suits you.
In fact, as of tomorrow – after breakfast, to be absolutely exact,
I’ll start calling you Cosmos.
Yes – no objections! - that’s an already established fact!
You are, after all, my entire world –
Even when – like a kitty – on my lap you are curled.
Everything’s relative, love –
Everything’s simultaneously giant and small.
Wise ol’ folks used to say: “All is one and one is all.”
And those scraggly gray beards used to know a thing or two:
All of us are a big boundless Oneness,
And that includes every little One too.
