Galendor: Setting Expectations

W. Eric Myers It took 15 years of dreaming Galendor's world before I had the confidence to flesh it out in words. So, I had a lot to tell.

How did I want to tell it? In short - MY way.

I imagined having readers really take their time to get to know Galendor and his friends before sending them off on wild journeys. In real life, I'm very guarded and don't let people get to know me until I'm sure I like them and they can be trusted. This is how I am with movies and books too. Why on earth would I want to spend that much time journeying (in my mind) with people I don't really like? I guess 'jaded' defines it best.

Now, we've all been properly molded with the perfect formula for story telling; rising action, climax, falling action. Characters should be the same relative age of the people the book is targeted for, rules, rules, rules.

Well, Galendor turns it's back (for the most part) on convention. The characters are chatty and don't shy away from silly words or phrases that must be taken in context to understand. And, readers spend the days and nights with Galendor and his crew almost in real time. Not that it is sluggish or boring, but, it is a BOOK, not a slam-bam, get 'er done visual medium. Isn't that what reading was supposed to be about, escaping this world and going to another in our minds?

The big risk is that book I could be considered the rising action, book II is the climax and book III will be the conclusion. I see the challenges I face keeping people with it until the end, but for those who do, I believe in my heart they will have had a unique experience.

I don't know, maybe I'm old fashioned, stubborn or foolish, but I figure if this is the way I would like a book to be, then there must be people out there who share my sentiment. In my naiveté, I also thought I could get paid while doing it!

Marie Johns I don't always "get" the point that Galendor is making, but when I do, I smile and say "What? No Way!" I have enjoyed traveling with the "dude" and meeting his wacky friends. Ready now to proceed with Book II. I am a "wordy" so I particularly like the play on words in the book. Keep writing W. Myers, payday isn't always on Friday.
