Happy Birthday. Your writing has been part of my entire adult life. Recently, I found I missed one of what I consider your best books: The Water is Wide. I read it after a visit to Dafuskie Island, a most unusual place even today. The book was funny, tragic and gave me a glimpse of just what a fiery young man you were. Wish your hopes for a new day for a better shot at education for young blacks had really come true. Anyhow, HB to one of my very favorite and very Southern authors.

Sad to read Mr. Conroy's obituary today, but despite the hardships of his life, even the tribute to his passing was able to make me smile, especially this: When his mother was dying of leukemia, as he recounted to The Guardian of London in 1996, she told him, “Son, I find it hard to relax when I’m dying, knowing you’re going to write down every damn word I say.”
See http://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/05/boo... for more. RIP, Mr. Conroy.
I just now see that Pat Conroy died earlier this year. He was a wonderful and unique writer. I very much enjoyed reading his books and learned from doing so. Thank you, Mr. Conroy.
I meet Mr Conroy once and heard him speak Several times. He was a kind and honest human being
And spent his life and writing telling his truth which in fact of matter, I think are unversial. His self revolutions inspired his
Readers, assured they always took some life lesson from connection with his works.
He inspired me to live above the oppressive nature of 'childhood'
Accept as if are its hero and live free!
Thank you dear ole soul
RIP (Charlestonsc)
