Here's my memory of that day....
Hadn't been working at McDonnell Douglas very long but launching the Shuttle successfully was pretty much a given. So most people didn't even gather around a tv to watch the launch. So I was sitting at my desk when someone with a very dazed look came wandering thru our area saying the Shuttle blew up. It's one of those things you hear that you can't even process the first time you hear it. Fairly quickly we all gathered in a conference room and watched the tv replays over and over and over again. Some people thinking that when they saw the SRB parachutes it was some sort of crew rescue, which of course wasn't part of the Shuttle. Couldn't stand watching that replay after that day.
