why 'acknowledge'?

The Prescription by Colette Brown
The ‘acknowledgements’ and Why?
Below is a copy of the acknowledgements from the book and then why these are important.
Acknowledgements:
Thank you to Jennifer, Jill, Jim and Sooz for being my sounding boards and for your support. Thank you to Benji for being a constant companion when I write.
Thank you to all the pharmacy dispensing technicians I have worked with over the years: you are all indispensable! The character of Fiona represents the best bits of all of you.
Thank you Kieran McAlindon for being the best chemistry teacher ever. My crush on you led me to be able to have a very nice career. Thank you to Mr Colpitts and Ian MacWhirter for being amazing mentors.
To my copyeditor Jillian Halket for being kind but firm!
The dedication is at front of the book. Acknowledgements come at the back normally and are a way of thanking people who have helped in the book in some way. This can be people who have helped in the creative process or from further back who may have inspired the writer.
So, firstly I have thanked my daughters Jill and Jennifer and my husband Jim for all their help as beta readers in looking over the manuscript and adding what they thought was good/bad/mad. Sooz is my ‘wee sis’ whose input I was very wary of: she hates the genre of female contemporary romance! So when she came back and said she loved it, I knew it was a winner. Benji helped a lot too by snuggling up and licking my hand when it was time for a break.
My copyeditor Jillian Halket is fair but ruthless! She will forever be haunted by my overuse of semicolons!
Then I had to thank some of the people form very early on in my life: the teacher who inspired my love of chemistry- Mr McAlindon of Elmwood Secondary: Mr Colpitts who taught me so much in summer and Saturdays in Boots in Gordon St Glasgow: Ian McWhirter my pre-registration tutor in R.Gordon Drummond in Bellshill. Three men who made me the caring pharmacist I was for many years before I gave it up to become a full time clairvoyant.
Of course, some of the most amazing teachers were the dispensing technicians who kept an eye on a young pharmacist who thought she knew it all!
All of these people from past and present have helped make this book. It is good to acknowledge them and remember them so that others can see that a book just isn’t about the author!
So what can you, my readers, do now? Buy the book/kindle when it comes out! If you like it please leave reviews! Writers don’t get rich from books unless they are JK Rowling. They do it for the love of storytelling. I feel creative and almost spiritual when a story flows. The joy of hearing that readers liked your book is one of the best things in life. Please also recommend the books to others if you like it. Word of mouth is the best way of promoting I know.
So thanks in advance to you, the reader!
Much love, Colette
PS : although not acknowledged in the book I really need to give a BIG thank you to Mark Wilson who is just a good guy who helps when the technology etc. fries my brain and I want to give up at the last minute. Thanks mark!
I also should give a wee shout out to the people who shared their stories of pancreatic cancer freely on support sites.
