Ships timbers that were first discovered in 2008 on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, have been reexamined by archaeologists from East Carolina University. Originally thought to be the remains of the HMS Swift lost in 1698, the wreck appears to be too large to be from that ship. An analysis of the construction techniques shows that the wreck seems to fit those of the HMS John a converted merchant ship.
This investigation is continuing, but archaeologists admit that they might never be sure which ship the wreck represents.
