The second hurdle is life is called failure, but it isn’t failure until we quit. The list of famous individuals, who have failed miserably, is long and profound. Take Abraham Lincoln whose fiancé died, failed in business, had a nervous breakdown, and was defeated in 8 elections before becoming president; the Beatles who were rejected and told they had no future in the entertainment business; Dr. Seuss whose first book was rejected 27 times; Steve Jobs who was fired from the company he started (Apple); Thomas Edison was told he was too stupid to learn anything; Albert Einstein who didn’t speak until he was four years old and told he would never amount to anything; Walt Disney who was fired for lacking imagination. Failure is another test and it is teaching us determination, persistence and one of the most important qualities to survive and thrive—resilience—the ability to bounce back when life knocks us down. Failure is another universal law of life. You will fail, indeed if you want to amount to anything, you must fail! Why, because it teaches us how to get it right, and it also teaches humility. Each of these tests is a double-edged sword, succumb to the pressure and you shrivel, rise to the occasion and you thrive. No one ever got it right the first time, not Steve Jobs, Walt Disney, or Thomas Edison. In fact, if you study the greatest inventors and most successful entrepreneurs you will discover that genius is disguised as a person who doesn’t fit in a box, they cannot be labeled, and in fact they reject the box so strongly that they are ostracized, or ridiculed, until they succeed. They keep trying until they get it right, learning from their mistakes, shattering their ego, learning humility and mutual respect. Which is why, in reality, there is no such thing as failure unless you quit; failure is the universe providing a course correction, showing how not to make it happen. Remove failure from your personal dictionary and replace it with gratitude and watch the magic happen.
