Library Books
So, I love libraries, but I've never been that into borrowing books from them.
This may be something of a statement of geek heresy, but it's described me for most of my life.
Two reasons. First, I'm afraid I'll lose track of the book or damage it. In fact, before moving overseas, I had a rare instance of borrowing a library book, and I proceeded to rack up enough overdue fees that the library was going to charge me to replace the book before I finally got around to returning it.
The second reason, which will be familiar to many of the geeky types is that I'm a collector by nature. If I was going to put the time and effort into reading a book, then darn it, I was going to keep that book on my shelf as a trophy. I've amassed quite a library of my own this way.
However, things changed when we moved overseas. There are limits (literally baggage weight limits) to the amount of books I can bring from the US to Vietnam and back. So while I did bring a supply of unread books, and replaced during our summer visit home, the library makes a lot more sense now.
I've even managed to convince that collector instinct in the back of my head that a listing and review here in Goodreads is enough of a trophy for me.
Of course, I still take some comfort in that pretty awesome library I have sitting in storage back on Cape Cod.
But in the meantime, I've started reading some library books from my school's library (Vietnam doesn't have a public library system like that in the US).
A couple of my most recent reads are library books, and I'm set to return them on time. Well, maybe a little bit overdue.
