My big spring project…

I am reading the new biography of Roald Dahl…

and have decided I need an office!

Currently, my office is also the laundry room, and Chris' office, and the walk-thru between the kitchen and the deck, and the room we store crap in.  I need a place. A space. A spot.  But I cannot afford to renovate my house, obviously.

So… I want to turn my no-electricity-having, moldy, trashed, hole-in-the-roof shed into a WRITING COTTAGE!  Dahl's "hut" (see above) was by all accounts a not-so-charming place, a drippy space, a junky place.  But it was his. HIS.

I want MINE!

Currently, it looks like this:

But what will it look like when I'm done? How little can I spend? Will I demo the moldy drywall? Will I DIG THE TRENCH FOR THE POWER LINES MYSELF?

All remains to be seen.

I doubt it will ever look like this! But that's okay.

I just need a place to hang my bulletin board and store my filing cabinets, and make a cup of tea.

(and maybe take a nap. Shhhhh)

I am accepting any and all advice on how to do this well, and cheaply. I am curious to hear what people think it will cost.

And guess what my cottage will NOT have?  That's right! INTERNETS!

Ben Langhinrichs It sounds like a wonderful project, and I wish you all the good writing-cottage karma in the world.

Susan Halley Hi Laurel. I have no ideas for you on your shed/cottage renovation. I am however, a firm believer in well done renovations on the cheap! If you know any electricians, contractors, and so on perhaps offer them some kind of swap. (No, not that kind!) People swap 2 week supply of veggies from their garden for work done or child care, etc. Good luck! Keep me up to date!

Hi Lauren,
I think your project is a wonderful challenge. I have done a great deal of redecorating over the years. My husband and I renovated our basement in our old summer home. It did cost about 3,000. Since then, we downsized and are living in an apt with our youngest of five children. I had to create a small work space for myself.
It is fun and you can do it with all of the things that you love. Colors, textures, sounds etc.... Using magazines like Romantic Homes is a good way to get ideas!Good luck.

Mir Have you read Hilary McKay's Rose series? The mother in that family has such a shed, for painting in.

Katy We would love to be able to create a writing office in our backyard also. However, first we need a shed!! Good Luck!
