Dramapuppy Good points. But wouldn't you agree Outsiders and West Side Story are a little more similar than most because of the gang violence and such?

Julie R ok, this will sound kind of simplistic, each group is made up of individuals. They were born into certain social situations that I think make them all learn that certain characteristics are necessary to survive in that group. It doesn't mean that that's what's in their hearts. When you take them out of that group and get past all of the defense mechanisms to who they really are. that's when 2 people who never should have fallen in love,do. I think that Pony Boy and Cherry could have, as they got older. In West Side Story, Maria and Tony were cheated because of other people's prejudice and hatred. I'm sure that these situations happen often enough today. Think of all of the people who hate each other just because of the group they're born into.

Dramapuppy Good points. Groups have an impact. Whether these people could have a relationship in the future is debatable though. I think it depends on how much you believe environment impacts you. I think the personalities WOULD have clicked well together but their upbringings have twisted their preferences.

Julie R I think that you're probably right in the majority of situations. Families and friends can put a lot of pressure on someone to stay within their own group. I admit that I'm a romantic and like to believe that sometimes love can be strong enough to make people try to get past the social barriers that are set up. Realistically I know it doesn't usually work that way.
