You're right, there isn't really. I do think that Pony Boy and Cherry would have been friends at least.I think that both of them wanted the fighting to stop. I think that they both could see past their differences.

They sort of do. Maria and Tony aren't allowed to be together since they are apart of rival gangs. When Tony thought Maria was dead since Chino apparently shot her, Tony runs out asking Chino to shoot him too. Romeo and Juliet and the West Side Story are pretty similar in some aspects.
