I agree jakob tried to hide his past from his mind for a long time then that old man brought it all back to life for him.To the point he thought he was loseing his mind

I'm with all the previous statements! The older gentleman's comment sparked the recollection of his memory and I think she created a great title out of that scene, but past that I'm not sure how deep the title was meant to be.
I also thought the title spoke to the main character's endurance. There may not have been anyone who could have carried that much water to elephants as a job, but you must have endurance to even try. Maybe he was speaking of his own character through criticizing the liar's.
if the water is for the elephants, who are the stars of the show, the main attraction per se, and it takes so much water to give to them that it's practically impossible, maybe it parallels his love for/pursuit of Marlena...all of the fighting and heartache and struggle he had to endure to ultimately make her happy.
I agree. Finding symbolism in everything is just ridiculous.
Try telling that to my English teacher! JK :) I'm definatly glad I haven't had to try to decode this for school. BTW I like your answer. :)
Well, on the surface of the story, the old man's story of carrying water for elephants was a lie and the death of August in the stampede was a lie. One was a bit larger than the other. So there is a connection between the title of the book and a major plot line of the story.
I think that the water (as in astrology) represents our emotions and the elephant represent all people who are misunderstood by others. That we all need compassion and understand and love.

I have to agree completely. I don't think every book is full of hidden symbolism. Sometimes the story stands on its own.

I agree with this. Though I enjoy finding symbolism in novels, I get the feeling that a lot of the things I think are symbolism were not meant to be by the author...
