H James Those interested in this question may wish to read the interview transcript posted on BLDGBLOG earlier this year.

China Miéville I’m intrigued by this question but in truth I’m not sure I quite understand. A unique role? I’m aware of and think about geography, the bloody placeness of place!, particularly as it intersects with politics, and I’m interested in the messy, overdetermined, chaotic but by no means unparseable totality of the lived/built/commodified environment of cities. I suppose I would try to make that totality – which is a key term for me, and one I think about a lot, in terms of making sense of the world – as vivid as possible, when depicted. Creating an imaginary world is in part about making that imaginary totality as messy but total as possible, basing its dynamics, though not its concrete specificities, on the real one.
