George R.R. Martin (Song of Ice and Fire; aka Game of Thrones): Hugely MONSTEROUS books that are enjoyable and present an on going series that will last many more years (hopefully).
Frank Herber (Dune): Gargantuan books that dwarf Clancy easily. Some though are not as good as others (Dune Messiah for instance) but are necessary for story continuity.

Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind and The Wise Mans Fear. Both are excellent!!! But you will love and devour them so fast that those two alone will never last you a whole year!! But you MUST read them!!
