i love your ideas about the false reality we are told through the book. It really makes so much sense. When i read people talk about how the elephant symbolizes his great memory, i thought it was a little rediculous because he obviously does not have a good memory. these were very thoughtful ideas. Also, i was never really satisfied with the ending, Jacob leaving the nursinghome for he circus. It just seemed too rediculous, but putting it this way makes it much more sensible
I really had not thought about it that way at all - your comments have mne wanting to do a re-read to consider the possibilities.
This is a good answer too! I never thought about it that way. I have taken to being wary of first person, because that tends to be the least reliable narrator.
You have a fascinating theory about this book! I never even thought of that, but it makes sense! I took a more superficial meaning of the title, thinking only about the man who claims he carried water for elephants without ever relating it back to Jacob. I love this idea though!
VERY interesting hypothesis! I took his running off and joining the circus as his death. I thought it was a metaphor for escaping (the annoyances of the nursing home, the limitations of his own body and mind, etc.) and a "return home," if you will, to a time when he was young and in love and with Marlena. But I hadn't given the title a second thought and also thought the old man saying he carried water for elephants was just a lead-in. You have me wanting to re-read the story now to look for support for your hypothesis :)
