Laura I hate Rose's translation... it is riddled with clichés and over-modernized. How did it get published? Who could have approved it? I am here looking for alternatives!

Katsuro Personally, I don't see any problem with using modern language in a modern translation, There is no such thing as timeless English, after all. If Hugo wrote in his contemporary French, then there's nothing wrong with the translators using their contemporary language of translation.
I guess you could draw parallells to how some people prefer the King James version of the Bible, even though the original New Testament was written in pretty casual and modern language.
