Thanks Rosun .... I have always been intrigued by the so called negative Character of Ravana ... i read a book in Kannada long back ...not able to recall the name :( ...which talks about ...Sita as Ravans daughter and its Ravana's greatness that he could not be killed by any one but an avatara of Vishnu
Plus it is said that Rama did a big penance in Rameshwaram to cleanse his sin of killing the great brahmin Ravana
Yes, Southern lore especially that of Kannada and Tamil tend to tell Sita as Ravana's daughter. It borders on incest. Hence bad karma due to Ravana and as a corollary the bloody defeat of him and the downfall of his empire.
Adding to what Anjali said in the point about Rama's penance in Rameshwaram . Reminds me of interesting stories shared by a tourist guide while I visited lanka , he said there are many temples in existence which is considered to be places where Rama gave penance on his killing of Ravana and these places are major tourist attraction for people from India taking holy yatra. The claim to an extent connects the dots.
