Oh...I don't think you should use the word "ambition..." Kate has established a whole new genre of "detective" fiction with Jackson Brodie. She just chose to hold down the complexity...
I thought she did learn things. She avoided her brother's friend in later tellings and also seemed to know not to let the little girl be alone.
