Absolutely! I read this less as a time travel or parallel university story. I pictured a writer at a typewriter trying one path, then another, tossing scrunched up pages into the wastebasket, then gathering them up and arranging into a multi-line complex novel. I don't think you can worry too much about the logistics of it.
I agree with you, Robert. The strands themselves are not important, just that there are so many...and how that can really change a story!
