Fred Smith I just think the book captured the zeitgeist of America in the mid 2000's and our attitudes towards our war and the soldiers who fought them. Rememebr, Billy's unit earned fame through a YouTube video that aired on the news. From there we have a "walk" through a Texas football stadium (our American coliseum) where the soldiers decree that watching "gladiators" fight for turf is boring. Then we meet our society's classes on the walk through the stadium. Texans rich and poor, all of whom want something from our soldiers beyond freedom. I read that there is a movie in the works, and I have great hope it can be the kind of flick that turns more people onto this book. Thanks for posting!

Matthew Turner Thanks Fred. The way you describe your experience of the book is so convincing! If I hadn't so recently read it, I'd be tempted to go back and try again! Maybe I'll wait for the film :)

Matthew Turner And yes, I just checked The Hollywood Reporter... seems a film could be on the way. But co-produced by the British Film 4?! http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news...

Fred Smith Not familiar with them. But hey Kubrick made Full Metal Jacket, so Britain has at least one feather in its cap when it comes to movies about American wars.
