I got this from Richelle Mead's website. It is in the FAQ session. The first cover is supposed to be Rose but this is also what she said.
"Covers are designed by a book company's art department and are something I have little say about. Since everyone has different ideas about how characters look, the art department's ideas may not quite match the books' descriptions or your ideas. Or, the art department may not have even read the book."

Agree with Rica. And am pretty sure the author's description of their characters trumps cover designs, since y'know it's the author's description and THEY created the book series/world/characters.
Yeah, some ppl don't like the movie adaptation and have their own reasons for disliking it, which NO one should bash each other for. BUT, Islamaphobia matters and shouldn’t be brushed off, why? BECAUSE Islamaphobia encourages VIOLENCE towards people who’re Middle Eastern and towards ppl who're perceived to be Middle Eastern, whether they’re Muslim or follow another religion.
And there are people from the Middle East WHO ARE PALE. Rose is described as pale in the books, her being pale DOESN’T negate the fact that she’s HALF MIDDLE EASTERN and LOOKS MIDDLE EASTERN.

I'm a bit late but I'd like to chime in. I'm half-Turkish, and Rose was the first time I ever read about someone like me. I was so happy, that even though I didn't absolutely *love* the books (vampires are not really my thing), I bought them all and read them carefully, searching for any and every mention of Rose's Turkish background. I was 17 and finally, *finally* had some representation. Then, years later, I heard there was going to be a movie, and I was cautiously excited. When I saw the girl from Suite Life on Deck was cast, I kind of wanted to cry. In the long-term, I don't care about her being pale. I'm super pale. My brothers actually look mixed race, but I'm white as white can be in terms of skin colour. It's the fact that she is white ethnically. My representation was gone and my culture and race ignored. I don't care about Zoey as an actress, how well she'll do or not, it's about the fact that they cast a white actress for a mixed race character. As Rica said, covers are notoriously white-washed, it is a big issue. I don't know if I can bring myself to see the movie, and I don't think people should bash it for "looking stupid" or anything, but there are legit reasons for people to be upset with the casting of Zoey. Grow up? I grew up feeling excluded and invisible, forgive me for being upset about the whitewashing of a character who meant so much to me.

Please shut up, you sound ignorant all the covers are not even the same. If you were a die hard fan of the series you would understand the frustration. You can't just cast anybody as the lead role. because they are more than likely the favorite character of the fans which you are not. So please shut up and let us die hard fans rant about our frustration.

It's her character and soul that should make you proud, not who they picked to portray her. Would you want a Turkish actress who wasn't right for the part? Ironically she has another series, Dark Swan, that has a guy who is of Polish heritage, but pretends to be Native American to get girls. Funny that she wrote into a book considering your angst. You should read that series.
