ME TOO!! I couldn't believe Josie would do such a thing and when Peter died in the end, I didn't feel bad but rather felt as though that there's nothing much left for him. He's done. At the same time though, Peter who started all this, it just goes to show how bullying can psychologically affect someone and then lead to Peter's unhappy ending (as if life wasn't miserable already).
It's been a while since I read the book, but Josie shooting her boyfriend was what I was talking about. It was a little too convenient the way she got the gun.
Actually with Josie killing her boyfriend it seems Picoult wanted to show that she had the abused wifes syndrome that the lawyer wanted to use on Peter, wasn't it so?
And as to Peter - explanation is not justification. He did explain why he killed all those kids. But it didn't justify his action so it was kind of justified for him to end his life. By this I mean - he caused grief not only to the victims but to countless of people, and if he had, in his mind, 'the right to do so' as defence, then by same logic he should continue being a judge and do it to himself too.
Yes, Peter suffered and it was horrible - so much more interesting moraly :) - but in my opinion it doesn't mean he has the right to keep on living and breathing (and all that, when he stays in jail, would be paid with the taxes of the parents of the victims... ;))
