Ethan Gallogly Hi Lin, Glad you enjoyed the book! I generally don't comment on people's Goodreads posts, but I wanted to reply about Syd's pack weight, given that in the story he is a very experienced hiker. My own pack for the PCT had a base weight (without food or water, but everything else: sleeping bag, pack, tent, groundpad, cookware, etc.) of 15 lbs (I still use a heavier traditional pack, some folks with UL packs got this down to 10-12 lbs; check out the various sites on "Ultralight Backpacking"). Add 1.5 lbs of food a day for 12 days and a 1.5 lb bear can and you get 34.5 lbs total. If each book is about 1 lb and you carry half a liter of water or so (0.5 lbs) you get Syd's pack weight of 38 lbs. Cheers! -Ethan Gallogly
