Bionic Jean This is the thread to discuss our golden age English mystery for July, which was a runaway winner in our poll! It is Evil Under the Sun, by the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie.

Reading and discussion begins on 1st July and finishes on 31st July.

Who will be joining in with this one?

Bionic Jean That's great news, Morgan!

message 3: by Taz (new)

Taz This is one of my favourite Agatha Christie stories

message 4: by Betsy (new)

Betsy I am reading it right now. I also love the movie.

message 5: by Jackie (new)

Jackie I finished it last week (I think?) and hope I remember. I should write a review

So should I. I actually voted against Evil Under the Sun just because I've read it so recently and so often. Love this book.

Bionic Jean It's all sounding good!

Yes, it's familiar to me too but I have a complete audio book, so will be joining in when I've finished the Gervase Fen I'm listening to.

Betsy - which movie are you thinking of? I think there are a couple of good TV ones.

I'm putting a comment in our chat lounge to do with this read 😊

message 8: by Betsy (new)

Betsy The one with the wonderful Maggie Smith as Mrs. Castle and the great James Mason as Odell Gardener from 1982.

I have seen the David Suchet one as well.

message 9: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean I'm trying to remember which of these two I prefer ... perhaps it's an excuse to rewatch them 😁

message 10: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Mclaren Will begin this on July 1. Will be so fun — its been quite a while since I read the story but have enjoyed seeing all the different versions just like you Betsy. In fact, I just might watch the David Suchet one this week!

message 11: by KeenReader (new)

KeenReader I'm in! I've just checked and it looks like the copy I reserved at my library is on it's way to me. I've got my fingers crossed I'll be able to pick it up on Saturday.

message 12: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean Great! I've just started my audio book today, on our first "official" day for the group read, and the writing is so lively 😊

message 13: by Betsy (last edited Jul 01, 2024 09:44PM) (new)

Betsy If you have seen the movie, you notice right away the differences between the book and movie. The #1 difference is Peter Ustinov as Poirot. I don't really see him as the Poirot of the book.

message 14: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean No, I don't either Betsy. But as I remember, the one with David Suchet is good.

Dramatisations of Agatha Christie often seem to relocate the story. But this one is solidly in the West Country.

Mrs. Gardner is such a hoot 😂

message 15: by Betsy (new)

Betsy In the movie she was portrayed by Sylvia Miles so you can just imagine that voice going on and on! But then James Mason is Odell so he was much more assertive, plus they had a tenuous relationship with Arlena.

I love the Gervaise Fen books. I have several of them on CD and often listen to them at bedtime.

message 17: by KeenReader (new)

KeenReader I am very frustrated. A copy of evil Under the Sun has arrived at my local library, but I can't pick it up because I've broken one of my little toes. I can't walk for 20 minutes to pick it up and driving is out of the question at the moment.

message 18: by Bionic Jean (last edited Jul 03, 2024 07:17AM) (new)

Bionic Jean Oh what a shame Keen Reader! Is there anyone who could pick it up for you when they are around? Otherwise you could ask the library to keep it for a few more days, to give you chance to work something out?

And I hope your toe soon heals - ouch! 😣

I'm trying to find someone who could pick it up for me. But many of my friends are on holiday and I hope to be able to pick it up myself before they get back. We usually have 3 weeks to pick it up,so I'm not so worried about that. It's just the frustration - It's so near and yet so far. I'll figure something out.

message 20: by Jackie (new)

Jackie Keen Reader whenever I am advising someone to ask for help (and if you can't think of anyone that is a different problem) I always tell them: people like to help and it's good for them, so don't hesitate. I hope you heal soon!

message 21: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean Yes, well said Jackie! It gives everyone a nice feeling. One of the saddest things is when someone says "Oh, I wish I had known ..."

message 22: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Mclaren KeenReader, hope you get your hands on the book soon.

This is one that I have had in my personal collection of Christie books but I have't read it in a while (2022!). I frankly forgot that there had been a movie of it — and with Peter Ustinov! I do remember the Suchet version and was thinking last night of perhaps watching that program again.

Right now though, I'm enjoying the reading and getting used to the characters.

message 23: by Kristin (new)

Kristin Komar I read “Evil Under The Sun” in just a few hours yesterday and loved it.

Bionic Jean I'm really enjoying it too! Because it's an audio book I'm reminded how Agatha Christie introduces all her characters one by one at first. It can be difficult to remember them all, so having a dramatisation in my mind really helps! When its a familiar story I like to pick up on any clues she might have dropped. And just a sixth in, we've been told that (view spoiler).

message 26: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie The short story Triangle at Rhodes has a similar story-line as this novel.

message 27: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean Is that by her as well?

message 28: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie Yes it is, but I'm not sure which collection it's found in.

message 29: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean It looks as if it is in Murder in the Mews and Other Stories. Thanks Rosemarie!

message 30: by Rosemarie (new)

Rosemarie Any time!

message 31: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Roth I’m reading the Kindle with Audible narration and was delightfully surprised David Suchet does Poirot’s voice! 😃

message 32: by LISA (new)

LISA Glass I love this book! It is so good!

Jackie Debbie wrote: "I’m reading the Kindle with Audible narration and was delightfully surprised David Suchet does Poirot’s voice! 😃"

I would love to hear the audible version. I am making a list of authors for whom that is true: Heyer, Wodehouse, and now Christie.

Reread by listening!

message 34: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I’m looking forward to reading this book. It sounds interesting and perfect for summer. I’m also going to watch the David Suchet adaptation :-)

message 35: by KeenReader (new)

KeenReader I got the copy I'd reserved just before going on holiday and I read it then. I've read it before and I love the 1982 film, so I knew whodunnit and how. I really enjoyed how Ms Christie introduced and wrote about the characters. The way she tells you about the characters through the way they speak and their attitudes is so clever. I also enjoyed the sneaky way she gives you the clues about the murder so it's not obvious that they are clues. The gentle humour was lovely too. All in all, it was the the perfect holiday read.

message 36: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean It was, wasn't it KeenReader? I enjoyed the audio of it immensely, and spotted quite a few differences from both adaptations which were in my mind.

David Suchet narrated it, and he was so good that I didn't know it was him until near the end! I did think the voice for Poirot was uncannily like his though. 😄I'll look out for more narrated by him on DAISY.

This is our final day for this read, but I'll leave it current for while to allow others to catch up.

message 37: by Dorothy (new)

Dorothy I just watched a documentary 'Inside the mind of Agatha Christie' on PBS. Very good.

message 38: by Lesley (new)

Lesley Wow, this as they say is a keeper, great page turner, good pace and believable characters. I read it first a month ago and have re-read it again, 5 star read . Thanks for such a good choice.

message 39: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean I'm so pleased you enjoyed it Lesley, and thanks to whoever nominated this one.
