Hi, Brad!
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond thoughtfully to my review. I appreciate you doing so, and I’m glad to get a bit more of a “behind the scenes” perspective on your process.
Thanks for sharing that quote from the BLM mission statement. I knew I didn’t agree with everything the organization stood for (i.e., abortion/LGBT), but the specific quote you shared is VERY informative.
I absolutely agree with what you said about family being under attack, in our society.
And, I can also appreciate where you’re coming from in terms of the bleak ending, the “shock value,” and your desire to represent some very harsh, but real, atrocities.
I do see where you’re coming from, in terms of the fact that this is book 1 in the series. I also recognize that Christian fiction is often critiqued as almost flippant, with solutions that feel too easy, or else little resemblance to reality (which can be very harsh).
I would like to add that, while I was craving more hope, I do find your book to be encouraging. It doesn’t leave me feeling light, but it does offer comfort to me as a reader in our crazy world… even in California, there is indeed a remnant.
Thanks, Brad.

Thanks again for this social commentary! In 2006 I was required to go to a staff meeting about bullying only to find that it was only a rationale for why teachers had to teach the LGBTQ couple as an alternative parent/ family style. Upon completion of the meeting all of us required to sign a paper which stated we would comply. I could not in good faith lie to the very children my Heavenly Father has entrusted to me as students. I did not sign the paper. I was fired.

I'm glad the philosophical arguments resonated with you. Some of those passages were the true inspiration for the book.
I know the BLM and environmental topics were somewhat controversial for you, but I might just offer this:
Parts of the BLM mission statement used to include language like this:
"We disrupt the Western-prescribed nuclear family structure requirement"
and it still contains language about abolishing Police and Prisons.
That is not a movement I can stand behind ultimately.
I believe THE FAMILY is an idea under attack in our society today.
I think we should expect less of government and more from individuals, families, and churches.
RE: the ending and the bleakness:
You're right! Its quite dark. I've read enough history to know that sometimes things get that bad, and sometimes a little "shock value" helps to make a point.
I think of how children have been called upon in times of great trouble to do adult things, and I am chilled.
I think of shocks and horrors from history and wonder when our generation will face such things.
I see the world as a dark place, and the ONLY light that shines is the truth of Jesus Christ. I did try and show that light shining through in the final pages of the novel, but admittedly only to a small degree.
There are, after all, sequels to write!
Thanks again for your thoughtful review!
best,
Brad
