I was more generous with my rating, and will probably read the sequel eventually, but I certainly shared the same sentiment. I feel like this just might be Sinclair's (unusual) preference for this particular type of ice queen, since I thought Vivian was very similar in behavior to the ice queen character in The Lily and the Crown. She likes them stone cold!

It's so odd, I read Truth and Measure which is the original unpublished fan fic version and gave that 5 stars (even though the plot is the same it was so much better because it was a lot more developed).
This published version just made me really uncomfortable and mad. I'm glad I'm not the only person who had an issue with it, after reading all the high reviews I wondered if I was missing something!
The Lily and the Crown was on my tbr list but I'm thinking I may skip it if there's another Vivian-esqe character in it!
Maybe others might disagree, but I personally found both of those ice queens similar in the way they regarded the younger woman with a sort of possessiveness rather than any kind of warm romantic love. Again, it's not necessarily a deal breaker for me, I just have to be in the mood for such a specific read.
I really liked the original Truth and Measure fanfic so much that I’m hesitant to read this novel. One of the problems is this is broken up into two books and by the end of the first book, things are still at the conflict stage between them. This is a slooooooooow buildup that I really struggled to get through, but when things start heating up, everything starts falling into place and the wait was so worth it. I think if I stopped halfway through, I wouldn’t have finished or liked it either.
I’m not sure what changes were made from the original to make it publishable, but I have such respect for it!
Sorry to hear it didn’t resonate with you.

Yeah, I agree! I'm all for an ice queen, it's actually one of my favourite tropes! As long as they eventually soften (unlike Vivian) then I'm a happy reader!

Same here, I adored the fanfic version! And clearly, Telanu/Roslyn Sinclair is an extremely talented author and I've loved some of her work; unfortunately, the published version of Truth and Measure just wasn't for me.
The main difference between the two stories, I think, was Miranda's twins. In the fanfic version, they brought a layer of humour and warmth to Miranda, but they don't exist in the published version, so we only ever see Vivian as an uncaring ice queen.
