In 1935, British archaeologists vanished inside an Egyptian cave. A year later, one man returned covered in mysterious scars.

Inside a mountain tomb, they’ve found a technologically advanced relic and a maze of tunnels. Dr. Nathan Trummel believes this tomb leads to the most guarded secrets of the pharaohs. When the explorers venture deep into the caves, they discover a hidden world of wonder and terror.

Marie I am going to throw two questions out there. :)

1) How did this book come about Brian?

2) What made you decide to set a horror story within tombs of Egypt?

Brian Moreland Marie wrote: "I am going to throw two questions out there. :)

1) How did this book come about Brian?

1.) As many of my novels do, this story started as a short story with two British archaeologists exploring a tomb in Iraq. It was originally about the Sumerians' mythical gods. I eventually expanded it into a novella and moved the story to Egypt because I find ancient Egyptian mythology interesting. The more I researched, the more I wanted to include historical facts and myths into the book, so the novella kept getting bigger until I had a full length novel.

Funny, my first novel draft Caleb was the protagonist and Imogen Riley was the National Geographic photographer and a supporting character. When I wrote the second draft I got the inspiration to switch the protagonist to Imogen and it make her the archaeologist.

2) As I researched ancient Egypt, their myths and texts, I read that the believed in the existence of the underworld Duat where all kinds of ghosts and monsters existed. The real myths inspired my story's quest into the tomb and through Duat.

Well I kind of got caught up in the story and it has been to the point of hardly being able to put down the book. Typical for me of anything I read by you Brian. :)

Will be stepping back into the story some more tonight. :)

Kasia, yes I'm very much a fan of nature. I enjoy hiking in the wilderness and exploring caves. Some of my caving adventures in the deep, dark underground influenced my writing the subterranean scenes.

message 37: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan 20% in.

Slow burn upon the dunes while something lurks in close spaces within the dark.

message 38: by Jeffrey (new)

Jeffrey Caston Everyone. I just wanted to let you know. Marie messaged me and asked me to tell you all that after the hurricane she is okay, but has lost power and internet for the time being. I'm very grateful that she's okay and until her internet is sorted out she might be absent for a bit.

Graeme Rodaughan Thanks, Jeffrey. Great news.

Graeme Rodaughan 31% in.

No spoilers. There's a feeling of doom. A kind of 'voyage of the damned.' The characters are committed to a course of action, like they are stuck on a ship on a trackless sea, confident they know what they are doing, but something waits for them just out of sight.

And like the crew on a doomed ship - there is no way to escape their pending fate.

Brian Moreland Graeme wrote: "Thanks. Like the crew of the Nostromo, or the Demeter..."

Agreed. I enjoyed the movies about both of those doomed crews.

message 45: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan The numbers are right, too. Enough characters to give shape to the party, while not too many such that we lose track of who is who.

I.e. We can tell cruel Sykes from fearful Vickers, and prankster Quig, and all from the taciturn, burly porter Bakari, the eager-to-help student Ely, the american journalist Caleb, the bald experienced captain Gosswick, welsh psychic Dyfan, and the main characters 'He with the secret agenda,' Trammel and sceptical 'I want answers for my Grandfather,' Imogen. Only Watters remains to be drawn...

Which suggests (view spoiler)

Kasia Brian wrote: "Kasia wrote: "Brian, are you a nature fan? Your descriptions of the surroundings are so evocative and flow through my eyes when reading like a movie. I instantly feel transported and in the moment...."

It really shows, this book is beautifully written which makes it so delectable for a horror novel! You remind me of Jeff VanderMeer, he legit wrote the Area X trilogy after sitting out in his backyard observing the plants in his intensely luscious backyard fight with each other over time haha.

The bits about Imogen exploring tombs with her grandfather were so special as well, made me feel like a kid in awe in some parts.

message 47: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan Mazes occur in my dreams on a regular basis, and I'm also claustrophobic, and I have had nightmares of 'mazes closing in around me...'

So, this story is ... may I say ... quite effective. There are moments and situations where I'm going, 'There's no way I would ever go there...'

Regarding Watters...can't give them all character depth unfortunately.

Kasia, I appreciate the compliments and comparison. I didn't know that about VanderMeer observing his warring garden. That's interesting. I've meditated in caves in Hawaii and Jupiter Cave at Mt. Shasta and swore I received visions that expanded my imagination, or at least a deeper appreciation of the natural world around us.
