Oleksandr Zholud I hope to start it tomorrow

Rebecca It says to be delivered soon on Libby, so hopefully I'll get it this week. I'm ready to start it as soon as it comes off loan.

ok, then I'll start a non-fic today instead and shift to this book after you get it

message 5: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Great, thanks!

message 6: by E.D. (new)

E.D. Robson I'll also give this one a go. Probably start in about a week's time as I'm currently finishing The Book of Doors.

message 8: by Oleksandr (new)

Oleksandr Zholud I've started it today. There is a nice concise outline of the 1st volume at the beginning and it was helpful in reminding me who is who plus one plot twist at the end that I forget

The first chapter is a new territory...

message 9: by Oleksandr (new)

Oleksandr Zholud 25% and I like how new elements are introduced, which are based on hints from the previous volume.

Oleksandr Zholud Chapter 1 (view spoiler)

Chapter 2 (view spoiler)

Chapter 6 (view spoiler)

message 11: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Yay! Libby has been saying “available soon” for like two weeks, sorry it’s not off hold yet. 😣

message 15: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Thank goodness for the synopsis at the start!

Chapter 1: (view spoiler)

The non Cahan chapters: (view spoiler)

Chapter 6: (view spoiler)

So on the whole, I'm a bit confused but trusting in the author to see us through! I'm happy to be back in this world and ready for the story to really take off!

message 16: by Oleksandr (new)

Oleksandr Zholud Agreed on non Cahan chapters - they while interesting are usually less gripping then ones of 'main characters'

message 17: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Still making my way through this, I'm enjoying the Cahan chapters but feeling like things are slowed down with the other POVs. I do find myself liking the Udinny chapters, I'm excited to see what adventures she gets herself into :)

Btw, is this the last book in the series (atm)?

message 18: by Oleksandr (new)

Oleksandr Zholud Yes, currently the last, the final volume to be out in 2025 IIRC

message 19: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Ahh I like the fact that Cahan now needs to be near Sohra (sp?), but I still don’t understand why we need the Uniddy chapters.

Yes, this "enemies linked with one chain" creates a lot of possibilities and tension.

even if Udinny were just for fun, it still would have been great :)

message 21: by E.D. (new)

E.D. Robson Finally started.

Rebecca Yay! I just finished. I liked the first book better and the ending of this book wasn’t very satisfying for me. I’ll add more next week once I’m back at my computer.

Yes, I also liked the first book more but I think this one was a solid continuation before the final

message 25: by E.D. (new)

E.D. Robson Finally finished! Running a bit late with my reading.

Although I sometimes get impatient with a long synopsis I was actually glad for one on this occasion.

I was a bit disappointed with the early Udinny chapters, feeling that they were just padding. However, for the last third or so of the book I became more interested as the different strands of the story were bought together and I'm now looking forward to seeing her link up with the other characters in the third book.
I feel that this book is as enjoyable as the first, if not more so.

My only issue is with the ending. I agree with Rebecca that it lacked something. I think it's because I like to have a firm conclusion of at least certain strands of a continuing story at the end of each book in a series. This one feels to me as though the author reached a certain point and decided that the word count had reached a handy number at which to end.
(Maybe I'm being a bit over-critical about this).

I'm certainly planning to continue with book three when it becomes available.

Now on to 'Haunt Sweet Home'.

Yes, I think this is a problem of a lot of middle volumes today, partially a result of love of trilogies

message 27: by Natalie (new)

Natalie I read the first one with this group, and just finished the second. I really enjoyed it. I'm glad to see a third has been announced.
I think the religion is more of a magic system since the gods a mostly absent; it's just the power we see.
I really enjoyed that the world building expanded in this one. We learn more about the Forestals and meet the Osere.
I think a big question for me is how the gods the Osere keep bound, Ranya, and Zorir all relate. There are definitely similarities in how they function but not enough to understand how one might relate to another.

message 28: by Oleksandr (new)

Oleksandr Zholud I also liked the broadening of the world

message 29: by Oleksandr (new)

Oleksandr Zholud The final (?) volume is out: Heart of the Wyrdwood, I plan to get to it this summer. Does anyone plan to join me?

message 30: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Oh awesome! Ya I’d join for sure. Library hold says 10 weeks but the times have been wildly off recently. Maybe we aim for late July? Or others can start and I’ll join once it comes off hold.

Late July is fine with me

message 32: by Kateblue (new)

Kateblue I have not even read the first one, but they look highly rated. I'm not sure if the series is for me, though, because it seems to be epic fantasy-not my fave.

What do you think, Acorn? Not for me? Or such good epic fantasy that I might even like it.

message 33: by Oleksandr (new)

Oleksandr Zholud I liked the first volume the most. It is a quite unusual setting - a deep dark forest, both deadly dangerous and the source of a unique resource - enormous trees (like miles wide and tens of miles long)

well, if I have time . . . but probably I won't have.

message 35: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Anyone interested in reading the 3rd book together?
