Please tell us a little bit about yourself -- why you joined, what you like to read, maybe a little bit of your background.

Hi all!

I just finished my degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in December 2019. I love to read modern and classic science fiction. I'm joining this group to keep my brain well exercised by participating in scientific discussions in between my knitting projects, lol.

message 3: by Daniel (new)

Daniel Welcome Kimberly; I joined a couple of months ago and am enjoying. Hope you also find it to your liking.

Welcome Kimberly, and congrats on the degree.

spoko Hi! I found the group because I just finished reading An Immense World, and I saw that it was one of this group’s recent reads. I’m discovering that I quite like science books (in spite of not being any kind of scientist myself), and the group bookshelf looks pretty interesting, so here I am.

I work in an academic library. I’m not technically a librarian myself, though I do hold an MLIS. My career is in technology support, and at this point I’m a systems administrator for the library. My education has all been quite strongly liberal-arts–centric (BA in English & History, MA in American Studies, plus the MLIS), but as I mentioned above, I’ve recently realized that I really enjoy science books written for a lay audience. I guess I enjoy science, in moderation. 😀

David Rubenstein Welcome to our group, spoko!
Just about all of the books we discuss here are for the lay audience. I also really enjoyed reading An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us. From my point of view, one of the great benefits of this group is getting tips about new, fascinating books on a variety of science-related topics.

message 8: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Welcome, Spoko. My education was also mostly liberal arts, but I worked in technology support, and as I've grown older my interest in science topics has grown. This group is great.

message 9: by Hector (new)

Hector Hi, everyone! I didn't know about GR groups and I just found out about them because I was looking to share more with people about great science books.

I studied actuarial science and work as a data scientist but I'm very curious about all kinds of science topics: biology, chemistry, physics, math, statistics, etc.

I joined this specific group because I really liked the list of books that have been read and I hope to have a great time sharing and discussing ideas with everyone! Happy to be here.

message 10: by David (new)

David Rubenstein Welcome to our group, Hector!
Please feel free to join our conversations, and also to start new topics.

message 11: by Jolene (new)

Jolene Leong Hi, I'm Jolene :) I'm currently reading for a PhD in Nanobiophysics, although I lean on the biology side. I usually like to read one non-fiction and one fiction book at a time, and have been on a pop science binge and wanted more. Found this group and joined :)

message 12: by David (new)

David Rubenstein Welcome to our group, Jolene! If you have any suggestions for books on nanobiophysics, I'd love to hear them!

message 13: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Welcome Jolene. I've never heard of nanobiophysics. Sounds intriguing. Is it something you could explain to a non-scientist?

message 14: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Welcome Pramod.

message 15: by Jolene (new)

Jolene Leong Thanks David & Betsy for the warm welcome :)

Biophysics have many branches, but the field I work in looks to apply mechanics to explaining biological processes. For example, red blood cells are transported around the body in the blood stream and subjected to lots of different mechanical forces. To draw an easy comparison, the RBC is a canoe in a river, and like the canoe, is subjected to flow, turbidity, resistance, etc. I work at the nanoscale (so that's the nano part of Nanobiophysics ;) ) and so tackle questions for molecules and proteins within the cell.

Unfortunately I don't know of books on the topic that is easily digestible. There is Random Walks in Biology: New and Expanded Edition, that many physicists enjoy, but I trained as a biologist and found it tough. Maybe someone will write it one day :)

Thanks, Jolene. That sounds fascinating. I read a book that was a little bit related, I think. The Equations of Life: How Physics Shapes Evolution. My first thought was, well of course physics affects biology! Did anyone doubt it? But it was an interesting book.

message 17: by Yemner (new)

Yemner Reydjers Hello all!

I just found this group, so I'm a little late to the party...
I love nonfiction science books. It's very important to have an understanding of our reality. The Magic of Reality is a great overview of how science can be magical. Right now I am working on The Unfolding of Language by Guy Deutcscher.

message 18: by David (new)

David Rubenstein Welcome to our group, Yemner!

message 19: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Welcome Yemner. It's never too late to join us. BTW, I enjoyed The Unfolding of Language: An Evolutionary Tour of Mankind's Greatest Invention. Check out my review if you want.

message 20: by Michael (new)

Michael Cole Hi, I am a lifelong physics and mathematics enthusiast. My degree is in pure mathematics. I spent 40 plus years in IT and retired. My retirement is - reading math and physics books (and other things like Sci Fi and history), doing math, writing (wrote a first course on General Relativity book, writing Sci Fi), designing models for 3D prints (have 10's of fans - yay!), and bike riding - I have three bikes (there's also a wife, grown kids and two dogs - I suppose they rank up there with the bikes... I suppose)

You wrote a book on general relativity? Sounds great!

message 22: by Debbie (new)

Debbie Hello!

I don’t have a scientific background, just like learning about a little bit of everything, so I’m glad to be part of this group to discover some new science-related books!

My favorite branch of science to reach about is astrophysics/cosmology, but I dabble in a little bit of everything.

message 29: by Luna (new)

Luna Nickerson Hello my name is Luna. My wife’s name is Vera. We enjoy audio books as a hobby (and for her she has a brain injury from the army so audio is best). I want to learn more about science and other cool things (the only thing I would consider myself well versed in is food science and history). However, my wife is a scientist who works in bioterroism and pursuing a PhD in genomics so as I read the titles of some of the past book club books she got excited.

We’re excited to read/listen along with you.

Luna and Vera

message 39: by Hanna (new)

Hanna Jordan Hello! I just joined this group today. I am currently pursuing a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology and mostly all I do in my spare time is read books of a similar thread that this group does.
My favorite topics to learn about are cancer, ethics/philosophy, neurology, and feminist perspectives in science.
I can't wait to read through some of the prior bookshelf, and to see where this group heads next!

Mostly I wanted to join a group because there is only so many recommendations that an algorithm can do.

Minner Hello, my name is Macarena (like the famous song) and from Chile. I am a master's student in mathematics and I like to read science as well as biographies of scientists, philosophy and historical novels, and a little bit of science fiction sometimes.

I joined this reading group because I am looking for a virtual place to belong to in the category of literary tastes. By the way, I like Alexandru's idea of creating a discord group.

David Rubenstein Hi Macarena -- welcome to our group!
Please don't be shy -- start right away by getting into some of our discussions!
