I couldn't agree with you more. I wrote a review on amazon a short while ago and pretty much said the same. I'm truly surprised that so many others have reviewed this work so glowingly.
I hear you on the cheroot thing. It is like it is supposed to be a character trait, but not a good one.
Smokes, fishes, recovered alcoholic, violent, women (invariably gorgeous) can't resist him. It feels like it was written by a teenager who just switched from Mickey Spillane to Hemingway.
