Elyse, I really appreciate the contribution you've made to the comments on this review and providing us with your personal insights.
You mentioned passing laws to protect children. In 1788, 1834, 1840 and 1875 the British Parliment passed Chimney Sweep Acts to protect children working as chimney sweeps. None of the laws were ever enforced. Shocking.
Many places in the world still exploit child labour.
I think you will enjoy this book.
Peter...I was moved by the review you wrote...I look forward to reading "Infants of the Brush"...Sincerely, Dean

Great idea for a book, no less scurrilous than the pickpocket kids in Oliver Twist. Thanks for the recommendation.

Thanks, Clare and I think Oliver Twist is exactly the reference point in many respects but the research into the child chimney sweeps and the legal case, were very well delivered.

Reading Elyse's comment I thought of the Irish-born rabble-rouser Mary "Mother Jones"Harris. While some do know she was a historical figure and not just a magazine, she is associated with fighting for the rights of miners Many are unaware that she led a three-week march from Philadelphia to New York City to advocate the end of child labor and harsh factory conditions.

Every day on my commute to and from DC, I pass a historical marker in Adelphi Maryland which marks the location of the farm where she died in 1930 at the age of either 93 or 100 (depending on who you believe).

Very interesting, Barbara, and I appreciate the additional information. I'll have to look out for the story of Mary "Mother Jones" Harris.
It is very interesting to read the gradual attempts to provide Child Protection in Law and how difficult it was to implement. I grew up hearing from Grandparents about their working conditions within the Textile Mills and how easily discarded you were if you suffered any injury.
Peter, thank you so much for recommending this book to me. You wrote a fantastic review as well.
I know a little bit about the young chimney sweep boys - from a former book based in London which I read years ago? But it was not as in depth as this one seems to be.
My grandparents too spoke of disregard / discard of those whom were weak or suffered an injury or defect. My grandfather was an Oiler at Swift company when the stockyards were famous in Chicago, Illinois. He had to climb like an acrobat to oil the gears. Alas, he fell off a platform one day and was paralyzed and eventually passed when I was a very young girl. My grandmother, worked at Armour meat products in Chicago as well; she had to stand in ice cold running water as animal entrails and parts swirled by her. She was tasked to make sausage and had bad arthritis in her hands and feet from working in those icy conditions.
Peter, What did your grandparents do in the textile mills? I find all this past history very interesting to know.

Thank you very much, Chris, for the generous comment and my pleasure in recommending this.
I'm struggling with the memories and unfortunately can't ask them anymore but they worked in the Linen Mills in Belfast through different stages of their lives. Initially, as children, they had to run about gathering and fetching bits and pieces and I remember them saying they were constantly over their knees wading through cold water. Later one worked the looms which was a very hard manual job.
I'm with you on loving history, especially when it affected our family ancestors.
