I actually prefer the older image (bottom one). I think it's moody enough. I haven't yet read the book to which this is a sequel, but definitely will.
While I had downloaded that bottom painting prior to the night before I posted the blog piece, I only made the cover, i.e. added the title box, that night, just for the heck of it. And now, I tend to agree with you. It does catch the eye far more readily than the top one. We'll see, I have plenty of time to tinker with them. In either case, the image is just a tiny scene in the story, I'm being lazy with this cover.
