oh my god... I read this as a kid and I hadn't realised the queer themes were so overt, maybe I missed it back then? I sort of want to reread just to see how it lands now in comparison.

I think it's something that would be interesting to reread! The queer themes would probably have gone over my head if I'd read it as a kid, but they're very clearly signposted to an adult reader.
Forgot to say, I did go back and reread this! Really interesting to notice the things that resonated with me as a kid and how much better I understand them now, and wow you weren't kidding about the anti-intellectualism! Glad I went back and read though.
