Thank you for your thoughts. I want to be very clear that this book does not condone animal cruelty. The scene is a depiction of events in 1995, and if you continue to pages 73–74 you’ll see Sophia take a stand by starting a petition. One of the boys even signs it, which shows that part of growing up is recognizing mistakes and learning from them. The heart of the story is about compassion, and as an animal lover myself I would never write something that promoted harm. I hope you’ll consider giving the book another chance, because Sophia’s voice is really the soul of the story.
