Mackey Maybe you're a natural born negotiator. I find many self help books are written for the masses in America who were dumbed down by government educators and no longer can think for themselves. For the rest of us these books appear silly and trite. I don't say that to be snobby but just as an observation of the sad state of the American business community for whom many of these books are targeted.

I can understand where you're coming from a lot of what makes one successful in school is the ability to listen and follow directions as well as regurgitate knowledge as you've been told it

Alexiy Sometimes (often, actually) it is only after someone puts something intuitive into words and recommendations that I really realize it and start using / following it.

I can totally understand that actually, I think it's why when I first read like one or two of these books I was like okay wow this is pretty legit but then I started to get annoyed because it all felt like the same few pieces of advice, advice that seemed pretty straightforward to begin with

Petra Valjan This review summarizes somehow my impression of the book. I don't doubt that ideas are very original and new at that time and that other books later on, are upgrading and exploiting them, but from point of today, when offer of books this kind is huge, thing is that writting is really not the best, not really scientific mode, nor really self help... something in between and not getting to me in the right way, not much inpiring and fertilizing my existing knowledge.
I guess, after more reading of these stuff... our expectations just get higher...
Ideas are good, but for me writting could be much better.

This is what I often get impression from the older books, pioniers at thinking new way at their times, which are kind famous, basis is wonderfull, but somehow miss me... like book should be re- written and that's why those who upgrade ideas and present more interesting way, seem pass better to me....even they originally did not develop basis of idea.

Mila Mi I really agree! All business books kind of starting to feel like one giant book

Mihail Yonkov That's a fair comment! Indeed the advises can feel a bit intuitive for people who already read other similar (and good quality) books. In Fisher's and Ury's defense their book is rather old. Just like any other thing written 40+ years ago, this one is already common sense. Still, reading is not like doing. In my everyday professional life of negotiations too many people seem to be on experience-steered auto-pilot with no trace of Getting to Yes.
