I recently found out that it was originally a serialized story, and that's why it's so long. I didn't know that, but it makes so much sense. There is SO MUCH going on in that book.

Yep, Dumas used to publish chapters in a magazine and they commissioned him to write for a long time. Sorta like a Soap Opera series
There is also some evidence that this book was co-written with another author but Dumas never credited him
I am not sure of how true this information.
