D.A. Holdsworth A stunning review - thank you, Taufiq. Reading it, I realised how much I've forgotten of the novel... Time to read it again, I suspect. I particularly appreciated the way you located Tolstoy alongside Hugo - comparing their background and their views on revolution. That made a lot of sense. And of course, Tolstoy's views on change and revolution are all so poignant in the light of what would happen in 1917.......

Noelia (thisbookishlove) Amazing review!!! This one has been sitting on my shelves for years, I keep postponing it, but I'm gonna read it, for sure. I've read Anna Karenina from this author, so I know what to expect. Books like this one or Anna Karenina are all time classics for a reason. They're just outstanding writing.

message 17: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Fabulous review, Taufiq! Tolstoy does always write such vibrant characters. Perhaps it's about time for me to give one of his novels a reread!

message 18: by Joe (new)

Joe Krakovsky That was a scholarly review, Taufiq! I will make a few comments though. In those days, and at least well into WWII, the lowly Russian soldier could be counted on to hold his position or attack into the face of death, regardless if he served the Tzar or Stalin. In that respect, it was the lowly foot soldier who decided battles. On the other hand, Napoleon was a master in the use of artillery and he had a well developed staff to carry out his orders. Of course his infantry's elan can't be denied. As for religion, I have to agree that there is a God. Again, great job, Taufiq!

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) I am inclined to agree with Tolstoy's views on war, Taufiq. Thank you for your wonderfully comprehensive review. 💖📚

message 26: by Federico (new)

Federico DN So much packed in this book indeed! Of course 1400 pages ought to do that xD. Not so sure about this one but I am considering reading some of his other, shorter books lol. An informative and very enlightening review Taufiq! Grand work!
