J. Schlenker I thought it was a unique story.

CanadianReader Nice to see you read something enjoyable after Every One Still Here, which sure wasn’t a pleasurable collection! In spite of the upsetting start, this sounds like a transporting novel. (Good ones are hard to come by!) I’m curious as to how Lila discovers Phoebe’s dark plan.

When I was young, a friend of my mother’s used to do catering for weddings and I worked for her. (It was weekend work) The brides I saw, especially those with the most elaborate gowns in the most decorated venues seemed pretty self-absorbed, actors in elaborate plays in which they were the stars. It’s hard to believe they, like Lila, would have been sensitive to anyone else. I’m kind of amazed Espach could have pulled this off!

Me too, J - it's unusual to have such piercing explorations of loneliness and identity in what is essentially a romantic comedy. I thought it balanced heartache and humour very well.

Peter Boyle Haha I bet you saw lots of drama behind the scenes CR! I guess it's the bride's big day most of all so I can see why they might be a little stressed out. To answer your other question, Lila walks into Phoebe's room and knows she is not a member of the wedding party, so she demands to know her reasons for being there. Not a woman to be messed with 😄

Peter Brilliant review, Peter, and reading it reminded me a little of A Man Called Ove.

Thanks Peter, I haven't read that one - adding it to the list!
