This truly is an epic story with a lot of different opinions on it. I look forward to your thoughts, Yun. Happy reading! 📖

I didn't get past the first few pages. I was planning to get back into this book when I had more stamina/headspace/time later this summer. Now it's going to remain on my dnf list. Thanks for saving me the trouble!
I can completely relate to your views on this book. It didn't do well for me too even though I hoped so badly that it would. When the 'climax' came up in the middle or some ways away from the middle, I felt a glimmer of hope for the story but as it went up hill, it came down hill just as fast. Definitely a minority view though as most people love this book but amazing review Yun!
I couldn’t finish it for all the reasons you mentioned. The idea with the magical silver was so cool but how it worked was glossed over. And Robin, when I dropped out after around a hundred pages I had learned nearly nothing about him. How was I supposed to like him? I didn’t rate this book but it was a huge disappointment.
Love your rant, Yun! I've seen this book pop up a lot here on Goodreads and considered checking it out, but your detailed review saved me! Thanks!
I wholeheartedly agree with you, and you put my thoughts on this book much more eloquently. Imagine my double disappointment as I pick up yellow face after this.
Like yea you’re smart, but is your whole purpose to just flaunt your knowledge around and laugh at the rest of us?!

Thanks! I think that's fair. I kept waiting for the book to turn into something more and it never did. So if you weren't grabbed in the beginning, you might never get there either.

Thanks! Glad it's not just me! 😅 I hear you on the developments. They seem so full of potential, but then nothing interesting ever came of them.

Thanks! Glad it's not just me that ran into problems. I hear you on not liking Robin. There was no likable characters in here, no one you can really root for.

Thanks, Debbie! You are a historical fiction reader, so maybe you would fair better than me. But on the other hand, I think you are safe to skip haha. :)

Thanks, Kathy! Glad it's not just me that ran into problems here! Yellowface worked better for me because it's satire, but yes, I know what you mean. It feels like the author has this style of overexplaining and being extremely heavyhanded with her messages, and it takes away from the stories.

Oh yes, the footnotes. 😂

I love a good rant, Yun, especially yours here!! lol I haven't read it; I have no plans on reading it. I appreciate your thoughts! Fair review and I hope you moved onto something more to your liking!
Not on my list but I did enjoy your review lol!
If this is the worst, then it’s all uphill the rest of the year 😊
I’ve seen a lot of positive reviews for this one. Such a shame this wasn’t for you. Though I understand it when it feels like the author just goes on and on banging on the same drum without more depth. Fair and honest review, Yun.
the moment i saw the long list of books meant to 'inspire' or 'familiarize' readers with this one, i already anticipated it would be an info dump like a textbook, and sure enough, there it was. sorry u didnt enjoy this :(
I’ve heard mixed reviews on this one too, but I’m not going to have any expectations going in when I do read it haha. Honestly, I think this is the only book of hers that I’m not in any rush to read any time soon like I am with Poppy War 😂. Really really liked Yellowface though!

Thanks, aly! Your intuition is spot on. I'm kind of puzzled by the popularity of this book, but what is one reader's infodump is another reader's chef's kiss? Haha.

Thanks, Lindsay! I really enjoyed Yellowface too, but I suspect that's because it was a satire and worked better for Kuang's style of beating a topic to the death lol. If you get to this book, hope you enjoy it better than I did. :)
