I believe that creepiness is the difference between what you see and what you think you see. It's when you wake up in the night and that suit which you laid out on the chair looks like someone sitting in the chair. It's all of those times you think you see a shark fin pop up in the waves. In film, creepiness is a game in which the filmmakers are showing you completely normal things in such a way as to make you think you are seeing something terrifying. If they're good at the game, they can make thousands of viewers swear that they saw something that was never on the screen. And because they only imagined what they swear they saw, everyone of them saw the most terrible thing they could imagine. Unfortunately, many modern filmmakers don't understand this game so they just throw their CGI nightmares onto the screen without a thought about how they just limited their audience's experience.
Ever? I would say the ending of Don't Look Now is creepy af.Also Argento's Suspiria from 1977 had me right when the Goblin score started.
The original Candyman is one hell of a scary movie.
Lost Highway freaked me out when I saw it alone in a run down cinema back then.
Of course The Blair Witch Project which has one of the creepiest endings ever.
The Australian Next of Kin has a unique unsettling atmosphere.
From the 2000s on I would say the creepiest movies are (funny, we also wanted to do a list about this topic for Halloween on our website):
Session 9
The Blackcoat's Daughter
Hereditary
Lake Mungo
The Poughkeepsie Tapes
The House of the Devil
Terrified
Talk to Me
Almost some of the best older creepers:When a Stranger calls from 1978...the movie itself isn't that great but the opening is a masterpiece which gave me the shivers for years.
Black Christmas from 1974. I could mention the original Halloween instead but maybe BC hasn't been watched by so many so this could be a high recommendation for those.
IMO completely underrated and super creepy is the 1989s Pet Sematary. The Elliott Goldenthal score with the children choir alone is pure goosebumps but I think most of the movies works if you can accept the melodramatic acting (which also gave it a certain charme IMO)
You know, there's a movie on Netflix that isn't really scary but, for some reason, jacked with me for hours after I watched it. And that film is Nobody Gets Out Alive. That movie messed with my chi. Dead Silence would be another one.

I need to read the book too. lol
Dead Silence is creepy as hell - I agree with you on that.
Other creepy movies are:
The Changling (1980)
What Lies Beneath (2000)
Burnt Offerings (1976)
Incident in a Ghostland (2018)
Havenhurst (2016)
Ghost Ship (2002)
Exorcist III (1990)
The Conjuring (2013)
I love creepy movies. These are some great suggestions! I'm definitely going to check some of these out, even the older ones. I'm in a creepy Halloween mood ! =)

Not many, if any, have come close in all the..."I think both of those films are creepy, the remakes and the originals. The Ringu series is pretty creepy overall, especially (to me) Ringu 0: Birthday. Also love A Tale of Two Sisters and Phone, which are both South Korean, I think.
Speaking of Asian Horror...I think Ringu and Ju On are way creepier than the US Remakes (Ring/Grudge) which were well done nonetheless.Pretty great are also the Thai Shutter, The Wailing and The Medium. Maybe my favourite Asian Horror is the Japanese movie Cure.
There are some really good creepy movies people have already mentioned (Lake Mungo, Session 9, The Blackcoat's Daughter, The Changeling, Exorcist III to name a few favorites of mine). I would add: The Orphanage (2007 Spanish film)
The Dark and the Wicked (2020)
The Others
Sinister
Eyes Without a Face (1960)
Carnival of Souls (1962)
The Strangers
The Taking of Deborah Logan
The Ritual
And my unpopular opinion, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House.

At the moment I can’t think of the creepiest movie I’ve seen (I’m terrible because I laugh at everything that happens 😬) but I remember when watching the grudge as a teenager at a sleepover I waited until my friends were nearly asleep and I was able to make that sound the ghost makes before attacking to wake them back up 😂
Brianna wrote: "At the moment I can’t think of the creepiest movie I’ve seen (I’m terrible because I laugh at everything that happens 😬) but I remember when watching the grudge as a teenager at a sleepover I waite..."Ouch...what a prankster =)
Lol I like to do jump scares and all…I had to learn not to do it with my husband. First time I did it he was working as a CO at a TX state prison (he is also a combat vet) and I nearly got knocked out 😬😂 needless to say I save it for my oldest and when I go home to my parents house lol

Movie is great and definitely creepy!
Caleb wrote: "@Adriennelee, oh goodness, The Taking of Deborah Logan. That movie is horrifying."That movie is creepy as hell for sure! I should watch it again as it has been awhile since I have seen it. :)
The Sixth Sense is the first that comes to mind for me. I remember watching it in theaters when I was like 11 and getting scared. Anytime I watch it now I still get chills and creeped out from certain scenes.

Especially when the kid comes back from the bathroom at night to find the ghost in his tent...super creepy!!
Erin wrote: "The ending to that movie is brilliant."Yes. Still the best twist ending to any movie by a long shot !

I had my dad watch the movie a few months ago and he didn't seem impressed with it OR the ending, I think he is crazy!
I need to rewatch Sixth Sense - that is a great movie. It has been a long time since I have seen it too.
You'll all laugh at me ...The first time I watched The Evil Dead, I had to walk out ... it was too confronting for me. To this day, I have not seen the full movie.
Regarding creepy, for me it, it's not the same as horrific. The Exorcist is horrific. The creepy stuff is typically something related to ghosts and slow transformation ... like The Shining.

There has been only one movie that gave me nightmares. That was the original Blair Witch Project. For those of you that are laughing at me right now, I am old enough to understand properly the "theater of the mind". Movies back in the day did not have great special effects and had to make the most of twisting up your head. This is an excellent version of that effect.
Papaphilly wrote: "There has been only one movie that gave me nightmares. That was the original Blair Witch Project. Not outright scary, the idea that it was played off that it was a real life event was brilliant.
Erin wrote: "Papaphilly wrote: "There has been only one movie that gave me nightmares. That was the original Blair Witch Project. Second: This is a voyeuristic activity of watching lost people lose it. If you watch the film, they make all the common mistakes that keeps getting them deeper into trouble.

The marketing really was incredible and I was so excited to see it. I went alone to up the creepy factor but in the end I thought it ended just as it seemed to get going. I probably need to see it again to find out if I still think that.
I am probably weird for this because not much scares me. So, when I saw Stephen King's Rose Red when it aired on TV and it gave me nightmares... I was hooked.

Another creepy movie is Insidious. The first one mainly - the rest of the movies in that franchise did not hit the mark as well as the first movie.
I recently just rewatched As Above, So Below and I don't know why but religious horror has a real good creep factor for me and while I absolutely loved it, still a good bit creeped out; definitely reccomend if you like found footage or religious horror
The Possession of Michael KingAfter poor advice from a psychic leads to the death of his wife, a man vows to disprove the existence of the paranormal by allowing himself to be possessed by demons.
