Woodcutters also sound well. What should be my first Bernhard? I want to read him because I already enjoyed other novels similar tot his work.

While his works about his youth are more accsssible, I think I would recommend "Woodcutters", Adina - it's such a typical Bernhard, I think it gives you a good grasp of what this author is all about!

Nice pick up with Ohrensessel. I'm AMerican but read Bernhard in the German. Had to look for a translation of that word because it was so perfect in the German.

Cool, love that you read in German! And yes, we have some truly weird words that you gotta love, Ohrensessel being one of them! :-)
I found this book extremely funny, and unexpectedly moving. I'm not surprised people were offended, but I also think that between the lines, Bernhard satirizes himself mercilessly (e.g. judging people for abandoning Joanna when he callously confesses to dropping her at the same time). The late revelation about Jeannie, after all he's said about her, made me guffaw.
