J. Gowin Well for the children of the night there is a comet named Neowise that can be seen this month.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jamiecar...

https://youtu.be/Ma5znD-s_M8

It should be visible from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres, though rise/set times and height above the horizon will vary with latitude.

And yes I know that comets during plagues have a long history of awful things, but it isn't going to hit us so we got that going for us.

message 8: by Caleb (new)

Caleb CW You would have to read the What are you Reading thread John. it's all there.

message 9: by Caleb (new)

Caleb CW I would have believed you had you not tried to entice me with free books lol.

message 10: by Caleb (new)

Caleb CW I'm just joshing the stack of kindle swearing was a nice touch lol.

message 11: by Caleb (new)

Caleb CW I can get behind audio books... I've listened to one or two or seven. Who knows.

message 12: by Caleb (new)

Caleb CW On a different note, has anyone watched Captain Kronos and is it any good?

message 13: by Marie (new)

Marie John wrote: "For some reason CalebCW is convinced that I'm in a plot to brainwash him into getting a Kindle. lol"

Well you know John - this is Castle Dracula so really it is not brain washing per se - it is called "glamour"! We have "glamoured" Caleb into trying to get a kindle!!!

Oh and here is the definition if you think it is a bunch of bunk! LOL :)

J. Gowin I can settle the Kindle debate quick, fast, and in a hurry. My Kindle has given me rapid and cheap (often free) access to numerous titles. It allows for easy participation in beta reads through file sharing. And as a tablet the Kindle Fire is a far better value than any IPad.

message 19: by J. (new)

J. Gowin Now that I've incurred the wrath of the Apple fanboys, here's an interesting automata vampire which popped up on my recommends.

https://youtu.be/rkDzDMclCBU

Something about that thing makes me think that there is a really disturbing story to be written about it.

Kasia i hate to say it but they also save space

Caleb CW that was pretty neat J. thanks for sharing!

Caleb CW Most of the libraries in my area are pretty sparse on what I like to read so I end up ordering most of my reading materials. I can see the appeal of the kindle I'm just stubborn, I like the feel and smell of paper books.

I agree, nothing beats that feeling.😊 But I will say that I enjoy the convenience of my kindle when I'm on exercise equipment like an elliptical. 😏

message 24: by Caleb (new)

Caleb CW lol I can't workout and read at the same time. That is impressive that you can Vickie.

Thanks, lol. It's the only thing that makes it tolerable for me. Watching tv or listening to music does not work.🤷🏼‍♀️😊

message 26: by Caleb (new)

Caleb CW I can't watch the TV while working out either. it's gotta be music, Unleash The Archers or some other metal group for this guy lol.

Marie I have two memories of physical library books. Both memories are years ago too. The first memory was back in the early 90's and I had borrowed a library book (do not ask me what is was - that memory is gone - lol) but the middle of the book was badly stained with what looked like drops of coffee? (not sure) through about ten pages of the book. It was like someone had had been sipping coffee and "dripped" droplets of it all over the pages. I didn't even finish the book. Took it back.

The second memory is worse than that one. Early 2000's I borrowed a library book (different library too) and this time the inside of the book had red print stains through the pages - like someone had been bleeding and left their fingerprints all over the pages! I didn't finish that book either!

I do not do well with any kind of stains in books from libraries.

Personally I think the books need to be inspected before they are put on shelves for readers. Now before you all go off on a tangent (LOL) about how hard it is to go through library books to check them out - I will tell you that I worked in a library for five years and we checked out all the books before they were put out on the shelves for public use.

If there were anything wrong at all with the books then they would go in a bin that would be put out for sale - then if the patrons wanted to buy them they could and if they didn't buy them then the books would end up being tossed if they were in bad shape. It was rare they were tossed but it did happen.

One time we had a book series that some of the books had two or three chapters of pages missing from the books. Those had to be tossed. No one wants to read books with pages upon pages missing.

Wow - I did have a lot to say on the matter!

message 31: by Erin (new)

Erin My library is pretty reasonable with their books. I think the one time I got a book the spine was pretty questionable but aside from that, the books have been in relatively decent shape. I would hope that through this pandemic, libraries have been going through books more thoroughly especially with reopening to the public (sanitizing, checking books for damage, etc.)

same! the library in town sucks. I have cards for a few others in neighboring towns but they aren't much better. FYI- some kindle books are lendable. that helps a lot.

So, one dark and stormy night, this little automata breaks free and goes on a blood-drinking rampage...

message 37: by Caleb (new)

Caleb CW I watched the librarians at one of my libraries sanitize the books, I was so proud.

message 38: by Caleb (new)

Caleb CW Thank you for the advice for True Blood Latasha I shall follow it!

message 39: by Caleb (new)

Caleb CW I have the habit of getting library cards from multiple libraries too Latasha lol. I was going to the special collections one here at the university it's full of horror, sci fi, and fantasy but with the pandemic my favorite library went down with the sickness.

LOL!! Well one consolation on it is this: you would never have to worry about falling out of bed with the tossing and turning! If you were confined in a coffin - where would you go? LOL :)

message 46: by J. (last edited Jul 13, 2020 06:14PM) (new)

J. Gowin About a decade ago coffins and caskets became a not uncommon project for woodworkers because if your family has to buy it for you, they're going to get hosed on the deal. Since a casket is too big of a case work project to build and then just store, many of the available designs served double duty as furniture. (It is just decorated case work.) The most common uses were book cases, chests, and strangely enough coffee tables.

message 47: by Marie (new)

Marie John wrote: "lol I showed my wife and she said "No, someone might lock us in!""

Then you could get an "open" casket bed with no lid!! :)
