Shuaa Omer This summarized my thoughts perfectly. I gained a lot of valuable information but the chapters on disciplining wives and children especially raised some red flags. I mean, what if there was a woman new to Islam reading this?? I could not see that situation bode well.

Abeer Arain I believe that instead of making judgments about someone like Imam ibn al-Jawzi, it would be beneficial to read about him, the time period in which he lived, and the condition of the ummah during that era. Moreover, Muslim scholars of the past were quite different from those today, as they were not afraid to present strict standards, unlike today’s scholars who may sugarcoat things for weaker Muslims like us. For instance, one notable practice was the frequent remembrance of death; they often contemplated mortality, whereas we tend to do so much less.
