Not sure what that has to do with this book.

message 3: by Angela M (new)

Angela M Great review, Diane . I love these kinds of stories, too.

Don’t be so hard on yourself - it’s okay to break vows when it comes to books! 📚📚📚📚

message 4: by Seawitch (new)

Seawitch I’m probably the only person in the world who doesn’t think they should read more 😂 So I understand your book addiction. I no longer buy books but it used to be a problem for me too. I have library cards to 3 libraries and somehow manage to get most books that way. Still, a book in the hands is a beautiful thing.

message 5: by Antoinette (new)

Antoinette Thanks for the laugh, Diane. I am suffering from the same incurable illness. We might need to start a support group. I told my husband that half of the books I’d read this year, I owned. But he said it didn’t count if I had just bought them, I needed to read the books on my shelf. He’s kind of right. Terrific review- sounds like another one for me to add and locate.

message 6: by Lori (new)

Lori I keep adding titles to the want to read list and shimmy around sky high piles next to the bookshelves. Hope we live long enough to take it all in;) thanks for the good review and you have only 6 weeks to go to keep your vow! Be strong

message 7: by Bianca (new)

Bianca Beautiful review, Diane. You can do it, you can do it. :-)

message 8: by Pragya (new)

Pragya Lol, Antoinette, I use that logic too! Thank God I don't have a husband to correct me. :p

message 9: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Thanks Angela. Love your positivity!

Seawitch, I use my library a lot too, especially for new releases, but I read a lot of forgotten authors that they don't carry. I can get a lot through ILL, but you are so right about a book in the hand...and on the shelf.

message 10: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Antoinette, the irony is that instead of buying now, I'm making a list of what I want to order in January. I think GR IS our support group. What do husbands know?

message 11: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Thanks Lori and Bianca, I'll try to stay strong. There was a local book sale here on Saturday that I managed to avoid...baby steps!

message 12: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Pragya, just because we have a husband doesn't mean we have to listen to them, lol.

message 13: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer nyc But your addiction is filled with such obvious love, Diane, I encourage it! And I can relate: I keep wanting to buy Elements for myself by John Boyne, but own an ARC of another of his and so won’t let myself. Ah, the reading games we play. You made me laugh with your comment that you now just have a list for Jan., 😅.

Cathrine ☯️ Loved your comparison with futuristic stories. I'm not going to buy this, I'm not going to buy this . . .🙋‍♀️

message 15: by Charlene (new)

Charlene I read most of Janice Holt Giles’ work long before GoodReads and all were good. My favorites were probably this one and her “sort of a memoir”, A Little Better Than Plumb: The Biography of a House. I remember scenes from both books, 40 years after reading them. Maybe it’s time for a re-read, thanks to your review!

message 16: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Encouragement for an addiction, Jennifer, I love it! At least it's not drugs or alcohol.

message 17: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Oh, go ahead and buy it Cathrine. My mail lady commented the other day on the books she delivers. I met her at the box and said, you probably think I read too much. She pointed to her Bluetooth and said she listens to books while doing her route, so no judgement.

message 18: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes That's exactly why I want to buy Hannah Fowler, Charlene. I know I'll reread it at some point.

message 19: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Robinson Love your opening about book buying. Do you know about Oh Reader magazine? I subscribe and have written for them a couple of times. They run whole essays about your dilemma.

message 20: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes I never heard of Oh Reader magazine Betsy, but I'll check it out. Thanks.

message 21: by Ann (new)

Ann Just know that you have friends with the same incurable disease. I just can't help myself........!

message 22: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Robinson Diane wrote: "I never heard of Oh Reader magazine Betsy, but I'll check it out. Thanks."

They sell it at your old job, B&N.

message 23: by Lori (new)

Lori Keeton Of course, I am itching to get to this now!! I’ll plan for early next year. What’s worse than buying too many books is having books like this on your shelf for years and letting them get passed by for another inferior choice! I’m so glad to see your 5 stars!!
BTW, there are 10 books in this series!!

message 24: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes I'm going tomorrow Betsy, to get the new Billy Collins book for my daughter for Christmas. I'll buy a copy then.

message 25: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Lori, you are in for such a treat! I can't wait to get to the next one.

message 26: by Antoinette (new)

Antoinette I was in luck today- a Little Free Library had an Anita Brookner waiting for me. I didn’t buy it after all :)

message 27: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Ann, I think it's a disease we all share. There's no cure.

message 28: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Little Free Libraries don't count as buying, so it's fair game.

message 29: by Julie (new)

Julie G Ha! There may be some of us on here who understand your "malady!" (As if I could resist a book about pioneers).

message 30: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Ha Julie. It's nice to know I'm not alone.

message 31: by Karen (new)

Karen Oh, Diane…. just buy the book.. you must!
Terrific review!

message 32: by Sara (new)

Sara You make me laugh. I think this is a disease we picked up in childhood and for which there is no cure.

message 33: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Thanks for the support Karen.

message 34: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Too true Sara, although in childhood I had to wait for birthdays and Christmas to build my library. Once I got my first job, it filled up fast.

message 35: by Angela (new)

Angela Leivesley I'd never heard of this author Diane. This sounds like just my sort of thing.

message 36: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Angela, her books are out of print now, so they can be hard to find. Even Kindle only has a couple of titles.

message 37: by Lori (new)

Lori Keeton I have to check Thriftbooks to find her books. It’s sad they are hard to locate.

message 38: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Even a lot of those are out of stock Lori.

message 39: by Mark (new)

Mark Porton Heeeey Diane, now don't take this the wrong way........BUT........your closing sentence just doesn't hold water 😂😂.......It just doesn't!!!!!

You also know you are confessing your addiction to a bunch of fellow addicts?? Hahahaha. Anyway, I loved this review and your devotion (compulsion) to buying books!! 😂🎈🤗

message 40: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Sort of like AA for bookaholics, and sponsors just help you buy more books instead of talking you out of it. I like it Mark!

message 41: by Mark (new)

Mark Porton 😂😂😂😂

message 42: by Libby (new)

Libby 400 acres! No wonder she needed an occasional helping hand. I live on 2 acres and find it challenging. I'm sure they got things out of their acreage that I'll never see out of mine. This sounds like a great story, Diane. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

I don't usually buy books due to limited space. The library is my dearest friend. This year, however, I've found myself buying more than usual. Before long, I'll have to go through and clean them out to make room for new. I enjoyed your excellent review :-)

message 43: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Thanks Libby. My library doesn't carry a lot of the older, out of print books that I like to read. ILL is nice because it gives me access to many other libraries. But, darn it, sometimes you just want to keep one on your shelf!

message 44: by Angela (new)

Angela Leivesley I'm sorry to hear they are mainly out of print ☹️ You do a good job of uncovering hard to find gems Diane 😁

message 45: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes A lot cf children's classics are out of print too because kids just don't read them anymore. It's really sad.

message 46: by Candi (new)

Candi You're a strong woman, Diane! I don't think I could make and keep such a promise :D This book sounds excellent and I enjoyed your review!

message 47: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes Thanks Candi. It's Nov 22 and I'm weakening already.
