I just read a review who criticizes the book as too long. I felt that way too as I was reading it, but I think now that it needed to be the length it is in order to fully explore the ruin and recovery that begins by the end. [I hope that's not too much of a spoiler.]
Roxane Gay says: "There is an interesting and relentlessly claustrophobic quality to the prose. You want to escape the quiet horror of Vanessa’s story while also wanting to see how it all ends, if she is going to be okay." That's about right.
