I thought this was a book that people either adored or hated. I've never seen it get 3 stars. :D I personally loved it.
I seem to be an outlier, I suppose. I thought much of the writing was beautiful, but to borrow someone else’s term “misery porn” I found the characters and their endless misfortune hard to bare and even harder to believe. It felt like an endurance test which went on for 800+ pages, and Victor Hugo novels are light reading in comparison.
