Amy I agree!! Makes no sense with the first person POV. I’m actually pissed about it because I enjoyed it up until the end.

It actually kind of made me mad too! It was pretty good overall and then that scene happens and the whole book no longer made sense.

message 3: by Myressa (new)

Myressa Starnes I 100% agree! I was confused for a good portion of the book. I also rated it 2 stars. I was really disappointed after all the type

message 4: by Kara (new)

Kara Buono Thank you! I thought I was the only one when I saw the other reviews. The pacing of the book felt off and the twist being from the FMC made no sense when we’re reading from her POV.

Nostariels_library I just finished it and your thoughts are the same as mine!

message 6: by Tam (new)

Tam Ugh, I severely disliked it as well. Plot twists made no sense, and the writing was atrocious

message 7: by Katherine (new)

Katherine I just finished this book, and went straight to the reviews. My feelings are validated!

message 8: by Addison (new)

Addison Armontrout i agree

message 9: by Elena (new)

Elena Urgh so real I thought the last chapters were absolute nonsense with no lead in. It was pretty upsetting tbh because I liked the rest of the book!!

message 10: by Nawal (new)

Nawal This - exactly this!

message 11: by Lauren (new)

Lauren M Yes, exactly. I had to give it one star because it makes no sense whatsoever and the ending made me officially not care what happens to these characters especially since the author can’t be trusted to make sense

message 12: by E (new)

E L Okay I thought it was just me. I kept getting confused. The explanations of blood oaths/bonds was confusing. Felt there was more to the Maile captain that wasn’t explained. This unreliable narrator with zero lead ins heading into the ending felt like it was undermining everything that came before.

message 13: by Maira (new)

Maira Totally agree with your review! Makes no sense. If she wanted that plot twist, she should have written the book differently.

message 14: by Alyssa (new)

Alyssa So glad I’m not the only one, my thoughts exactly!!

message 15: by Meg (new)

Meg Smith The plot twist made me laugh out loud because it was so random

message 16: by Sarah (new)

Sarah All of this. It made no sense. The plot was not developed and the writing was not great. I don't understand the hype at all.

message 17: by Islamiyyah (new)

Islamiyyah Abdulfattah Thisssssssss

I hissed and never look back

message 18: by Katie (new)

Katie Ball I have never been so irritated with an ending!!and I agree with all of your points.
Might I add the use of the word *Cunt* during the sex scene was a HUGE turnoff 🤮🤮

message 19: by Charlie (new)

Charlie This was my view point on the twist as well. Everyone I know that read it said ‘It was so good the twist was sooo unexpected!!’ And it’s like…of course it was unexpected. It made no sense and almost negates the entire book. And I’m also a little tired of people equating ‘shocking twist’ with ‘good book’. I mean, to each their own and I’m not going to yuck anyone’s yum because it really doesn’t matter. BUT, more than one person thought the overall book was ok but simply just because the twist was a shock they rated it higher. Like I’m sorry make that make sense?

message 20: by HaydenWright (new)

HaydenWright The ending was awful.

message 21: by Shelbi Lynn (new)

Shelbi Lynn I still think about this book and how the ending made zero sense.

message 22: by Chloe (new)

Chloe I read this after hearing- “it’s so good! The plot twist” I don’t think I’ll trust those people with book reviews ever again.
I waited and waited. I didn’t expect it to be that, it made NO sense!
I’m still confused…. The book went on about bonds, surely then Acker would of known her intentions?
Beau betraying him as well! that made no sense either. Geraldine being his mother was pointless to add.
It was so wishy washy in the end almost comical, like the joke was on the reader!
Super disappointing. :(

AmyHeartsFiction Completely agree, I feel gaslighted after all her contrary inner monolog for 400 pages....

message 24: by Katrin (new)

Katrin D Completely agree, that amazing plot twist was so surprising because it was absolutely disconnected with the rest of the book.

message 25: by Kaitlyn (new)

Kaitlyn Hunter I completely agree with this. It made no sense and was completely out of left field. I will also not be finishing the series

message 26: by Lauren (new)

Lauren M Exactly! The plot twist literally negated the entire book

message 27: by Carrie (new)

Carrie This is probably going to be a spoiler, so read with caution if you don’t like spoilers.

At first, I thought the plot spoiler was out of left field as well, but now I think it actually answers one of the biggest questions I had while reading the book. If the king of Alaha is so powerful, why has he been stuck on a ratty island for so many years? (It honestly wasn’t THAT hard to land a boat on the coast somewhere.)

Well, he’s not…. He’s the one currently ruling Kenta, not Acker’s real father. Maybe Geraldine is even the one who brought Jovie to Alaha.

Still leaves a lot of questions, yes. When did they get Beau on their side? After Jovie met her? Why could Jovie trust Beau to believe her and not Acker? Who knows. But I don’t think the remaining questions are unanswerable.

As for the inner monologue, I doubt any of it would actually be contradictory if you went back through it. How about Jovie knowing Acker was a prince without being told? How about her thinking being an oracle and being even closer to his thoughts would be terrible? Her initial hostility towards him after he “saved” her? Her mention of missing Kai more than Messer? It also seems like Acker really was the one to fill her in on a lot of the historical context, which is why all she and Kai knew was that the current Kenta king was bent on destroying Alaha - but not why. Probably a cover up so no one would ever know he was still alive. And he had probably erased the true history from stories in Alaha a long time ago.

Just my thoughts, maybe they’ll help people feel less cheated lol

message 28: by Joy (new)

Joy Not only does the “twist” feel completely thrown in for shock factor; it was recently done in another dark fantasy romance already…and even though that book was a train-wreck, it was at least hinted at throughout the book. Metal Slinger’s ending basically makes B/J an unreliable narrator; how would we trust anything she does in the next book?

message 29: by Alaina (new)

Alaina I lost all respect after that "plot twist". Of course it was shocking. It didn't make sense.

message 30: by Candace (new)

Candace Everyone hyped this book up for the crazy twist at the end so I read it. And if it weren't for Acker and Messer, I would've rated it 1 star. Such a stupid, nonsensical twist. I don't think I'm picking up book 2.

message 31: by Dez the Bookworm (new)

Dez the Bookworm Yes. And yes.

message 32: by Mickayla (new)

Mickayla Took me 20-30% to really get into the story, was enjoying myself and then the plot twist at the end just made me mad

message 33: by Carol (new)

Carol Wyatt Totally hated the ending. What a joke this book turned out to be. I will definitely not read book number two. The author turned into a huge disappointment along with her book.

message 34: by Azhara (new)

Azhara Yeah the book was meh the ending was interesting. Felt like the betrayal should have happened around 65% into the book

message 35: by Aulden Bowker (new)

Aulden Bowker I feel exactly the same as Mickayla... EXACTLY

message 36: by Gulia (new)

Gulia I am 20 pages in and I’m going to DNF. The writing is exactly as you describe.. unpolished. I’ve found actual errors! Who edited this?!

message 37: by Anita (new)

Anita Stefanek While I lapped this book up and loved it, whoever the editor was for this book needs to be fired. SO MANY typos and errors all throughout the book it was mildly annoying…that last chapter especially had even a few errors within ONE page like come on

message 38: by N00n44 (new)

N00n44 The ending made no sense, we read the entire book from the one pov and yet no inclination until the reveal that there was foul play. The pacing was all off too! I thought I was reading the second book of the series at one point.

message 39: by Kyla (new)

Kyla Gariepy I can’t stop thinking of the ending. It just ruined everything. It made it seem like everything I just read was a lie. I don’t know how to process this.

message 40: by Emma (new)

Emma Agreed! Unpolished. Transitions very poorly done. Confusing at times. The scene with “blue”/Messer in the forest was difficult to understand. And twist a ending is only good when you can look back in the book and see the pieces fall into place. This “twist” was completely out of left field and made no sense with the first 95% of the book. I felt as deceived as Acker in the end. 🤷‍♀️. Oh well.

message 41: by Mella aka Maron (new)

Mella aka Maron The ending ruined the whole book for me, not because of what happened but because there was no foreshadowing when we were IN her pov the entire book?? No. 🤦‍♀️

message 42: by Saba (new)

Saba Tariq Agreed!

message 43: by Briana (new)

Briana Rothrock Couldn't agree more

message 44: by Angela (new)

Angela Cory This is my favorite genre and I love series, but I won’t continue with Book 2 for the same reasons others have stated. The surprise near the end ruined it for me. None of it made sense.

message 45: by Caryn (new)

Caryn Mitchell Agree!

message 46: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Goetsch Even several months after it came out, there are so many typos and errors. It certainly made it frustrating, but I did enjoy the writing style and story.

message 47: by Rose (new)

Rose It definitely can benefit by having good professional editing done! More than just copy editing.

message 48: by Emma (new)

Emma Yessss that twist was so random. It was super jarring and made no sense. There was so much down time in the book, why not hint at the betrayal before hand. And why was Beau involved??

message 49: by Reader (new)

Reader I got a copy from my local library that has LITERALLY at least 15 typos or grammatical errors. Especially toward the end of the book, which to me made it feel so rushed and unpolished. How does that happen? Sometimes I was left thinking , “oh ok, I guess we are in a new chapter now.” It felt like she just stopped in the middle of a paragraph. I don’t see why them traveling over seas and on horseback took up SO much of the book, it could have been condensed to develop the plot twist more. Also, if they passed Ackers mom leaving, wouldn’t he have recognized his own mother? Why did it seem like Jo’s mom was going to come get her, only to never show up again in the book aside from when she called her knife. So many holes!

message 50: by kaylee (new)

kaylee ugh i just finished and agree with this comment section. i’m so sad though because i reallllly enjoyed the book, but the ending left me feeling so upset. i was rooting for acker so hard, and what, now she wants to go back to kai? also, when they were on land in the very beginning with kai, messer, and aurora, wouldn’t she have started to feel all the nausea and sickness from her powers like she did when she was with acker? so many holes, which sucks because i was really starting to like the characters. and she never really mentioned why beau was involved at the end as well? maybe we’ll see in the second book, but the ending makes me not want to read the second one, it was just way too jarring and all the backstabbing pissed me off honestly.
