Abigail Bok Curious why you keep hoping that! It's like hoping to like Ernest Hemingway (at the opposite end of the blather spectrum). The only Joyce I could tolerate—and that only partway—was A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

The 'blather' part too I agree with you, but it was a little easier for me to cosy up to an unlikable Hemingway than an unlikable Joyce. It's probably cultural.

Vanessa M. David, I have to agree with you about 'Exiles.' I finished the play this morning and it was sordid to me and I did not like most of the characters. I can appreciate in context its themes and respect the work as he wrote it in 1918. Not my favorite Joyce work, though. I hope you're having a great start to the new year!

Happy New Year to you, too, Vanessa. I always feel that I should go back to Joyce and mine some of the literary gems that so many others have detected. However, I agree with you that Portrait... is my favorite work of his. Next perhaps we should consider his stories in The Dubliners.
