I love how the book feels more like a tragedy rather than just straight horror like it’s advertised.

Something else I notice, every time I read the book: Though I like the film, the book is so much better... I feel like you don't even get to know the characters just by watching the movie.
I am in! Wanted to re-read this one and was waiting for it come up again as the month's read. Nice way to start spooky season.
I am actually listening to the book this time around. I've read it twice before....this is a classic King!

I read The Shining as a Teenager and it is very interesting, how the story feels totally different all these years later. There is such an undercurrent of inevitability and a deep deep melancholia. It feels like a punch in the gut. And my heart breaks for Danny being so young and facing these horrors. Still a great read! With a lot of layers…

Well, not the Stephen King books which are turned to films.
K wrote: "Does anyone ever like the film more?"You probably mean Kubrick's film. There is also the Shining TV mini series which is much closer to the book.
I personally love Kubrick's version as well. It's just something different from the book, maybe just inspired by IT.
(oops...NPI)
The film is great but the book is better, if you really want to understand the story and the background of the characters
I really enjoyed re-reading this novel. The creepy atmosphere still hits. And the novel delves into the family dynamics and Jack's upbringing to create a more detailed story than any of the movies.Reading this now, one can see how King was developing his style. This is a classic King story, but he got better as a writer.
This is the best one, so far. Every now and then I close the book, stare at the front cover and give thanks for the fact that I’m reading it. Haven’t moved on to Rage yet, and haven’t even finished this one but so far my ranking would be 1. The Shining, 2. Carrie, 3. ‘Salem’s Lot
It’s interesting that Jack thinks the hotel would want him instead of Danny., especially since Danny is just a little boy.

Daniel wrote: "Since I finished yesterday, I wonder: Is there anybody who liked the film more?"Yes as a die hard Stephen King fan and am still young so i have so many still to read. I went in thinking 'Oh this is gonna be better than the movie and the miniseries' I'm from Maine and my dad was even in the same grade as his son Owen. So his books are very popular in Maine of course. I finished this book and my first thought after closing the book was "Man Kuberick really made this story that much better". I will say Misery is Easily the best book and movie pairing, love those so much.
i think the book is better in a way that it explains in detail what is going on. When I first watched the movie I thought the house makes Jack crazy but when I read the book I realized there is so much more behind it, his background, his struggle and alcoholism.
